Most pet owners admit to feeding their dogs and cats the occasional people food snack. It’s OK to give treats every once in a while, but to keep your pet healthy and fit it’s important to choose the right ones.
The American Animal Hospital Association says that up to 10% of your pet’s diet can include snacks. They have created a list of the healthiest people food treats for dogs and cats.
These treats are also low in calories, which is good to keep in mind because a 100-calorie snack might be fine for you, but too much for a small dog or cat.
Healthiest treats for dogs:
- Green beans
- Carrot
- Cucumber
- Zucchini
- Apple
- Banana
- Melon
- Cooked lean meat
- Plain cereal like Cheerios
Healthiest treats for cats:
- Cooked poultry or fish
- Plain cereal
- Cooked egg
- Carrot
- Zucchini

I tried giving my dog a green bean tonight. Wouldn’t touch it. On the other hand, we dropped a box of cereal on the floor this morning and he was all over it.
Haha, that’s great! One of my cats likes cereal but the other one looks at him like he’s crazy.
Serving Norman & Elsa green beans always makes me smile. They absolutely love those fiber rich, low-cal treats!
Yay, Norman and Elsa! It’s so cute when dogs crunch on veggies 🙂
Heck, they eat more veggies than I do! LOL
Haha, lol!
Yum. Good to know what we can feed them.
Yes, lots of healthy options, even for picky eaters.
