The American Kennel Club has analyzed dog breed registration data for the year 2021 and has compiled its annual list of the most popular dog breeds in the US.
For the 31st year in a row, the Labrador Retriever tops the list at #1 in popularity. What are the other top breeds? The full list, which you can see on the AKC’s website, is very long, with nearly 200 dog breeds included.
Besides the Labrador, what other breeds are top picks among US dog owners? The top 20 are:
- Labrador Retriever
- French Bulldog
- Golden Retriever
- German Shepherd
- Poodle
- Bulldog
- Beagle
- Rottweiler
- German Shorthaired Pointer
- Dachshund
- Pembroke Welsh Corgi
- Australian Shepherd
- Yorkshire Terrier
- Boxer
- Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
- Great Dane
- Miniature Schnauzer
- Siberian Husky
- Bernese Mountain Dog
All sizes and shapes are represented in the top 20, from the tiniest Yorkie to the biggest Great Dane. Did your favorite dog breed make the list?
My favorite is Rescued Mutt.
Excellent choice!
Everyone thinks their dog is the best and they’d be right, notwithstanding what the AKC thinks. 😉 Interesting compilation of breeds especially after the top 20 are listed. Thanks for sharing!
Yes, there’s a pretty interesting mix of breeds as you go further down the popularity list!
