FREE PUPPIES! is the title of a new documentary film that follows a dedicated group of people who work to rescue and rehome the many stray dogs in the American South.

The reasons for the large numbers of homeless pets in the South are complex, as a piece on the film in the New York Times notes. In some rural areas, there are insufficient community resources like animal shelters. Pet owners may also suffer from a lack of knowledge or financial resources to properly care for their pets, such as when unaltered dogs are allowed to roam and reproduce.
